Networks of Our Time

A curated survey of four professional networking platforms, with attendant notes on each

· On View Through Autumn,
Curator's Statement

This exhibition gathers four well-known platforms from the present moment in professional networking. Each is considered on its own terms and with its own properties intact. No comparative ranking is intended; the value of the survey lies in the differences between the works.

LinkedIn · a general portrait

Founded 2003, Mountain View · Microsoft (acq. 2016)

The most widely held work in the present collection. Over one billion individuals across two hundred countries are documented within its registry. Its scope is total: a profile system, a job marketplace, a content publishing facility, and a recruiter's exchange, all maintained within a single account.

That LinkedIn remains the central artifact of the professional networking category is, on the evidence of this survey, beyond reasonable dispute. Visitors are nonetheless encouraged to attend to the platform's evolving texture, particularly in its content feed.

Indeed & Glassdoor · a study in search

Indeed founded 2004 · Glassdoor founded 2007 · Recruit Holdings

A diptych in two related works. Indeed is the largest employment-listing artifact in the collection, receiving some three hundred and fifty million visitors monthly across more than three million employers. Glassdoor, its companion, displays employer reviews, salary data, and interview reports.

Together they form a study in the active phase of the professional life. Neither piece offers identity, content, or community functions. They are exhibition pieces best engaged with during search.

Wellfound · a focused study

Founded 2010 (as AngelList Talent) · San Francisco

A specialised work attending to a particular subject: the matching of candidates with early-stage and venture-backed companies. Approximately eight million members and one hundred and fifty thousand listed firms appear in the registry.

Notable for its insistence on full disclosure of compensation, including equity ranges, on every listing. Direct correspondence between candidates and founders is the established convention. Outside of technology environments the platform's character is less defined.

Meetup & Lunchclub · a return to presence

Meetup founded 2002, New York · Lunchclub founded 2017

The most distinct work in the present collection. Meetup organises in-person gatherings around shared interest, accommodating some fifty-two million members and producing over two million events annually. Its companion Lunchclub introduces members through artificial-intelligence-assisted one-to-one meetings.

The piece occupies a category the other works do not seriously approach: the physical gathering. No employment marketplace is offered, nor is any professional identity registered here. The medium is, instead, presence.

On the value of holding more than one

It is tempting, in any survey of related works, to ask which is the most significant. The honest answer in the present case is that the question is poorly framed. LinkedIn is by every measurable scale the most significant single work in the collection, and most professionals will at some point hold a copy.

Yet the value of the other three works does not arise from their competition with LinkedIn. It arises from their independence from it. Indeed offers a more efficient search; Wellfound a more transparent set of disclosures; Meetup an exit from the screen entirely.

The careful collector will accordingly hold more than one. Most do.
